Assemblymember Appeals For Support After Devastating Windstorm Destroyed School, houses in Akatsi South.
Hon. Japhet Festus Gbede, the Assemblymember for Wuxor, Have, and Sremanu Electoral Area in the Akatsi South Constituency of the Volta Region, has issued a heartfelt appeal for assistance following a catastrophic windstorm that ravaged the Wuxor Junior High School and numerous homes in the poor farming community.
In a post on his official Facebook page, the Assemblymember described the devastating impact of the disaster, which struck on September 10th, 2024, leaving students, teachers, and residents without access to vital facilities and shelter as heartbreaking.
Speaking to the media, Hon. Gbede emphasized the dire nature of the situation and the need for immediate attention from NADMO, government agencies, NGOs, and individual philanthropists. He specifically called for support in the form of:
1. Reconstruction of the damaged school building
2. Provision of temporary learning facilities for the affected students
3. Relief items, including food, shelter, and clothing, for the affected residents.
The Assemblymember shared the story of 8-year-old student at Wuxor Junior High School, who lost her classroom and textbooks in the disaster. "Ama's story is just one of many," he said. "These children are the future of our country, and it's our responsibility to ensure they have access to education and basic necessities", Mr. Gbede stated while speaking to the media.
He also mentioned the plight of Mrs. Akuyo, 79 year oldlady who lost her home and livelihood in the storm. "Mrs. Akuyo is struggling to provide for her children," he said. "We must come together to support her and others like her."
The Assemblymember stressed that the situation requires urgent attention to ensure the well-being and education of the affected students and residents.
