The leaders and residents of Bawku in the Upper East Region have received assurances from President John Dramani Mahama that he is committed to establishing lasting peace in Bawku in order to promote socioeconomic growth.
During a visit to the Bawku Naba, ZugraanNabaAsigriAbugragoAzoka II, Overlord of Kusaug Traditional Area on Tuesday, President Mahama declared that restoring peace to Bawku would be one of his top priorities if God granted our wishes and he were elected president.
Since this is my first significant job outside of Accra and it has been precisely one week since I was sworn in at Black Stars Square, I wanted to come and reassure you that we will do everything in our power to restore peace to Bawku.
In an effort to end the decades-long Bawku Chieftaincy issue, the President made the trip as part of his pledge to engage the warring parties and pertinent parties.
Since the battle resurfaced in October 2024, at least 40 people have died, and since November 2021, at least 240 people have died. . In order to promote peace in the region and other conflict areas of the nation, the president announced that appointments would be made this week to the various security ministries and agencies. The Minister of Defense, the Minister of the Interior, the National Security Advisor, the National Security Coordinator, the Director of the National Intelligence Bureau, and everyone else will be appointed this week, he said. After these appointments are made, he will give them instructions to make Bawku a top priority.
President Mahama urged the chiefs and local residents to exercise patience while the government attempted to restore lasting peace to the region, stating that he was aware of the problems in Bawku and the detrimental consequences on livelihoods.
