The National House of Chiefs has been requested to make clear what position it takes on illicit mining activities in Ghana, especially the pervasive practice of "galamsey," by the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey.
Comprising diverse media entities, the alliance conveyed grave apprehension about the ecological and socioeconomic consequences of illicit mining, underscoring the imperative of robust guidance from established institutions to tackle this urgent matter.
As to the coalition's latest statement, the issue has been made worse by the involvement of traditional leaders in illicit mining.
They urged the National House of Chiefs to oppose galamsey and support sustainable methods that put the welfare of the local populations impacted by mining operations and the environment first.
The coalition considers chiefs to be essential in leading their communities.
"If the communication of this remark is accurate, the Coalition observes that the National House of Chiefs has unfortunately encouraged and reinforced the widespread and wanton destruction of Ghana's environment and the commonwealth that our ancestors have left for us."
An extract from the statement stated, "The apparently fairly stunning encouragement of unlawful mining is particularly troubling considering the constitutional duty assigned the council to function as caretakers of the traditional resources of the many communities led by its members."
