Gen Brice Oligui Nguema, the name echoes throughout Gabon, bringing fear and uncertainty to its citizens. The once peaceful and stable country now trembles under the grasp of this infamous coup leader.
The son of Gabon's late dictator Omar Bongo, Nguema seems to have inherited not just his father's name, but his authoritarian rule as well. On January 7, 2019, he led a military coup that aimed to overthrow President Ali Bongo, who was recuperating from a stroke in Morocco at the time.
Nguema's attempt was short-lived, as loyalists quickly squashed the coup. However, the violence that followed left many dead and wounded. Nguema was arrested and detained, awaiting trial for his crimes.
Despite his apparent failure, Nguema's name continues to circulate as Gabonese citizens fear he may try to take over again. He remains a symbol of corruption, power, and chaos in Gabon's political history, and his legacy has yet to be fully written.
