AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine guards and small-scale miners engaged in a violent altercation that is said to have killed eight persons.
During the altercation in the Ashanti Regional town, four cars were set on fire.
Tensions in the area have increased as a result of the event from yesterday night. At midnight, the small-scale miners stormed the mine's grounds, arriving armed and ready to fire, according to witness Eric Gyamfi, who talked to Myjoyonline.com.
The attack's motivation is yet unknown. More than eight miners were killed when soldiers manning the facility opened fire.
While the situation in the town worsens, injured people have been sent to the AGA Hospital and the Obuasi Government Hospital for medical care.
Disgruntled small-scale miners have turned to the streets after the altercation, burning tires and damaging property. Residents' anxieties have been heightened by reports that four vehicles, including buses, have been set on fire. "Some of the AGA buses have been burned, and they are burning tires on the road. The protest is still ongoing as of right now. Due to the shooting deaths of some of their coworkers, the Galamsey guys are [demonstrating]. According to Mr. Gyamfi, "they are trashing stuff," Myjoyonline.com reported.
